Manan’s post around the time of the newest incarnation of the CM made me feel guilty for writing such a crappy site. But the problem is that in order for me to be more of an engaged, “academic blogger,” I have to first become more of an academic. So here’s this hiatus.

It’s not that this silly site has consumed my time—the void of posts the past year proves that—but it’s that I want it to be a valuable site, and my academic priorities prevent me from making it valuable. So I hope to return, once I have a better sense of a “field” with which I can engage. And perhaps the return will include whizz-bang technology and flickr and guests and whatever else will be popular in like ten months.

So happy 2006, all, and let’s hope that when I return, everything will be better off in the fields of politics, music, baseball, and literary theory. I’ll also change the look of the site so people see that there’s new shit afoot. This hiatus may also be involved in part with the fact that I’m teaching. Still, I’ll be commenting over at Sum’s, so if you need some DH-hiatus reading (and I doubt that), you’ve got a great target to go to.

In parting, I just want to say that 24 doesn’t deserve the rap it gets for being right-wing. The fourth season, in fact, works overtime as a direct critique of the US, when one remembers that it was US weapons turned against the US in order to destroy it. I read that as an assault on US policies that justify the mere existence of something that can level an entire city. That is, the terrorists need the hyperbolic militarisation of the US in order to develop the arsenal to wreck the US. 24 is a protracted investigation into blowback, plain and simple.
