You were a laugh riot—one I have not felt in a long, long time. I think Andreas told me he was going on a Preston Sturges kick, and I figured I’d secretly follow along. I’d seen Sullivan’s Travels, but I think that’s it until I saw you. And, yes, you were absolutely hilarious. There’s the underscoring embittered hilarity of the scene of rich men constantly bending over backwards for the beautiful young woman that dovetails nicely with local laughs. You’re such a harsh, cynical view of the relationship between love and property that I can’t recommend you highly enough, and I’m looking forward to running through the netflix collection of Sturges movies—though I suspect I’ll skip a repeat viewing of Sullivan’s Travels.

Viewing you, in fact, dovetails nicely with the release (finally!) of Ninotchka on DVD. This is the movie that introduced both the Lubitsch Touch and the Wilder Twist to me, and I can’t wait for it to come down the Netflix queue. While watching you, I kept thinking of this movie. But you’re far, far more bitter.

If this apostrophe feels a little thin and underwhelming, I apologise, but I’ve been away from the posting scene for a bit, having returned only now that Michael D. Brown has been firedresigned.
