It’s raining today. A lot. This is great news, though there were some wet clothes this morning. Among the wet clothes was a hemmed pair of pants. Vogue Cleaners set me up, and I’m the hottest I’ve ever been. Lock up your daughters…

Ravi asked if two guys beating up a coach at Comiskey counted as an American version of the hooliganism I described yesterday. I’d say no, because, most importantly, the football hooligans direct their attention mostly to other supporters or foreigners (who are, implicitly, supporters of whatever team England/the club is playing). Buford did not talk about attacking players/managers at all. In fact, the only example of that that I know of comes from Lazio–where Lazio Ultras would go to practices to berate the team. Bellos (see below) writes about the Gaviões da Fiel, who apparently terrorised Corinthians once when they were bad (like, ran the team bus off the road), but, again, it seems that attacking players is rare. I did think some more about why hooliganism doesn’t happen in the US, and it seems like the US cops simply would not put up with it. Maybe I’m just being naïve.

I gave $130 to these thieves today, in registering for the English Subject Test. I also started in on my online applications. It is very weird to do an online application, I think, and so far these guys have the best one. The online app over here is a nightmare. It’s really slow and clunky–java applets are so late ’90s–plus, I think I pretty much have to be on a PC using IE. The Johns Hopkins app refused to let me complete it until I was able to pay them $55 via credit card. More time wasted. I didn’t bother with Cal’s app, yet, and this dept seems to just demand a bunch of .pdfs–which is ok by me. I actually am pretty sure that I miss paper applications. Then again, this way I can nibble at the apps over time.

This weekend, all the young kids come to campus for Orientation. As a result, Pete and I are going to arrange a Century Club initiation for ourselves. Hopefully, Mik and Darius will be up for it, too, and then we can all go to Jimmy’s to watch football.

Additionally, Phish new year’s tickets seem to have sold out in something like 12 minutes. This is insane. I don’t care, since I’ll be here, but, still…
